Forklift Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts should be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety measures must always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area must be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the post should not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Do not permit items like matches or lighters to be utilized when someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging place properly ventilated. The recharging process could release fumes. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
