Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and bigger refueling tanks must be stored in a different building or complex so as to be more secure. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a secure enclosure which could only be accessed by authorized personnel. It is important for the safety of the operator, and everybody they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This task could utilize retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be utilized. It is also necessary to always have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Additionally, anyone who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also needs to be trained to use the fire extinguisher effectively and safely. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a lift truck should be correctly trained. This training covers a classroom portion in addition to hands-on training. Once completing the training session, the person needs to be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also covers the proper method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving as well as site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
There should be a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS center situated inside the facility where the forklift is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals which are used on site. This would also cover the propane that is used to refuel the unit, together with the acid in the forklift battery.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all employees at all times. If any exposure incident occurs for instance, the person has to be evaluated right away. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to must be given without any delay. Generally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is required, as a general rule; have a medical doctor examine the injury if you truly think it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
